Neuropsychology is the study of the structures and functions of the brain and how they related to certain psychological processes and behaviors. It’s a field in psychology that aims at understanding how behavior and cognition are coded for by the brain. Neuropsychology is also essential for the diagnosis and treatment of many psychological, behavioral and neurological disorders as many behavioral and emotional problems can be due to pure medical/neurological diseases, not due to psychological diseases, hence the name: “Neuro”-psychology.
Clinical neuropsychology is the application of neuropsychological knowledge to the assessment (neuropsychological measurement and tests), management, and rehabilitation of people who have suffered disease or traumas to the brain. Many patients present with emotional problems such as aggressiveness, agitation and depression whereas in fact the original problem is a neurological problem ex: Brain stroke. Neuropsychological testing and brain imaging complete each other to confirm a diagnosis because the treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis.
